Cognitive Radio and TV whitespace

Base Work

Active research on using TV bands for broadband connectivity is being done in Center for Applied Research in Electronics (CARE. IIT Delhi). As Research Associate, during May-Sept, 2011 I have worked on

  • Spectrum Analysis of TV bands (Sub GHz band) in and around New Delhi and identified spectrum holes and various spectrum users as found in NFP-2008.
  • Link Budget Analysis and Simulation of data rates and maximum cell radios achievable in TV bands using Okumura-Hata Model.
  • Studied currently evolving protocols like IEEE 802.22 and IEEE 802.11af for communication in TV bands.
  • Established point-to-point communication link in UHF bands using two USRP2 Modules and implemented very basic energy based spectrum sensing algorithm.

For a basic overview of TV band communication and its need in India, read this.

I have also written a short white-paper on “Broadband connectivity to Rural masses using TV bands in Indiawhich talks about the innovative license regime being developed worldwide for these bands and also highlights technical challenges to realize such networks.

Current Work

Currently, we are working on developing a frequency agile SDR platform to implement a testbed for TV whitespace communication for rural broadband applications. My current focus areas are

  • Development of wideband Rx/Tx architecture with frequency agility and good noise performance.
  • Development of PHY layer protocol which could use different pulse shaping to avoid in-between narrow-band interference.
  • Implementation and performance benchmarking of spectrum sensing algorithm – feature detection based and matched filter based.

I am more then willing to discuss ideas relating to these in particular and frequency agile cognitive radio in general. Reach me at mayank [dot] grd [at] gmail [dot] com or reach me on twitter @ideas2ignite.
